After having participated in the first POP-ALERT consultation in November 2014, SOS Catastrophes was invited this week to intervene in the second POP-ALERT stakeholder forum workshop.

The POP-ALERT project, an initiative financed by the European Commission, aims at developing mechanisms on how best to alert and support actions by citizens under crisis conditions in familiar and unfamiliar surroundings using generic methodologies, strategies, training, and a mix of technologies designed to improve population preparedness and increase community resilience.

At this forum, we had the opportunity to present our network in front of forty stakeholders such as research centres, emergency and rescue organisms and enterprises specialised in new technologies. In our intervention, we explained the path of victims through the trauma of the disasters and the following recovery process. While we stressed on the necessity to help and care for the victims, we underlined the added value of considering victims as collective security actors.

The day before the stakeholder forum workshop, we also joined the POP-ALERT expert group meeting. We provided our insight on matters such as the crisis communication and took part in a simulation exercise.

The discussions and debates at both the forum and the expert group were of high quality and all stakeholders were particularly sympathetic to the questions of the victims, an issue that they would not necessary have in mind before.
